About Us

Black Nurses Ottawa is organized to encourage communication and dialogue among Black nurses in Ottawa and to address promoting the health care needs of our community. BNO was originally formed in Ottawa, Canada. A group started in Ottawa and now has a growing membership. BNO offers educational and community based programs ranging from clinical counselling to professional development.

Professional Growth

and Development

We offer workshops and training on advanced nursing practices, leadership skills, and career development and Organise events that connect members with leaders and organisations for mentorship and job opportunities.

Community

Engagement and 

Collective Impact 

Health Education Programs: Organise outreach programs that educate the Black community on health issues, access to healthcare, and wellness practices.

Partnerships with Local Organisations: Collaborate with other community organisations to create programs that support both healthcare and social needs within the Black community.

Volunteer Opportunities: Encourage members to participate in community service initiatives, enhancing visibility and fostering relationships with the community.

Feedback Mechanisms: Create channels for members to voice their needs and suggestions, ensuring the program remains relevant and impactful.

Celebration of Achievements: Host annual events to celebrate the accomplishments of members and the community, reinforcing a culture of recognition and pride.

Mentorship and

Support

Mentorship Program: Establish a structured mentorship program, we pair experienced nurses with newcomers to provide guidance, support, and career advice.

Peer Support Groups: Create safe spaces for members to share experiences, challenges, and successes, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Resource Sharing: Develop an online platform for sharing resources, job postings, and personal development opportunities etc.

Empowerment

and Advocacy

Leadership Initiatives: Encourage and support members in leadership roles within healthcare settings and community organisations.

Advocacy Campaigns: Lead initiatives addressing systemic issues affecting Black nurses and the broader Black community such as equity in hiring and promotion practices.

Public Awareness: Increase visibility of the contributions of Black nurses through community events, social media campaigns, and collaborations with local organisations.

We believe in collective impact and community engagement, advocating for equity and representation within healthcare. Together, we create a supportive environment that amplifies diverse voices, nurtures talent, and drives positive change for our community and beyond.
