What is Black Nurses Ottawa?

Black Nurses Ottawa is organized to encourage communication and dialogue among Black nurses in Ottawa and to address promoting the health care needs of our community. BNO was originally formed in Ottawa, Canada as a space for networking, mentorship, employment opportunities, support, Knowledge sharing and professional development. BNO offers educational and community based programs ranging from clinical counselling to professional development.

Our Philosophy

We believe the concern for national healthcare starts locally in our community.

As nurses, it is our responsibility to make a difference in the community in which we live.

Our combined efforts, education and expertise in Nursing can make a positive impact on the community of Ottawa, our nation and the world.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the BNO is to address the health disparities of the African American Community (and other minorities) through ongoing education and awareness, mentoring of current and future minority healthcare professionals, and offering networking opportunities through partnerships and collaboration.

Our Mission

•To foster an atmosphere of communication through effective dialogue and support among nurses
•To participate in health promotions to encourage healthy lifestyles
•To mentor and encourage student nurses
•To increase access to health care through participating in the legislative process to ensure health polices are representative of those impacting the Black community

THE OBJECTIVES OF BNO ARE AS FOLLOWS:

To offer annual programs addressing specific clinical issues effecting minority communities.

To maintain a database of Black Ottawa's Nurses consisting of education, professional experience, employment, etc.

To award scholarships based on the availability to student nurses.

BNO was formed out of necessity. We organized to encourage communication and dialogue among Black nurses in Ottawa and to address promoting the health care needs of our community.

Patricia Ogban, The founder and a group of black nurses both LPNs and RNs, began to meet at a local church to establish the Black Nurses Ottawa in June 2022.

The BNO realized that their concerns were common with those of the National Black Nurses Association.

The BNO is incorporated as a nonprofit organization in Ottawa and Ontario.
