About Us

Welcome To Black Nurses Ottawa

We are working together to provide Programs to recruit more Black women and men into nursing. A forum for Black nurses to share job information and provide programs of interest to the Black community. A unified voice in demanding that the nursing profession be more accountable to its Black members. & A unified voice in working toward improved health care for the Black minority communities.

What is Black Nurses Ottawa?

Black Nurses Ottawa (BNO) is an organization created to foster communication, collaboration, and dialogue among Black nurses in Ottawa. It addresses the specific health care needs of the Black community while also working to bridge gaps in representation, understanding, and advocacy within the healthcare sector. Since its formation, BNO has served as a crucial platform that emphasizes networking, mentorship, employment opportunities, support, knowledge sharing, and professional growth for Black nurses in the Ottawa region.

Established in Ottawa, Canada, BNO was initially envisioned as a space where Black nurses could connect, share experiences, and support each other in navigating the healthcare profession, which often comes with unique challenges and barriers. Recognizing these obstacles, BNO also seeks to enhance the visibility of Black healthcare professionals, promote equity, and address systemic issues within the healthcare system that affect both practitioners and patients.

Our Philosophy

We believe the concern for national healthcare starts locally in our community.

As nurses, it is our responsibility to make a difference in the community in which we live.

Our combined efforts, education and expertise in Nursing can make a positive impact on the community of Ottawa, our nation and the world.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Our Mission Statement

At Black Nurses Ottawa (BNO), we unite to build a vibrant community of Black nurses and associates in Ottawa. Our mission is to foster professional growth, provide mentorship, and empower members to thrive in their careers. We believe in collective impact and community engagement, advocating for equity and representation within healthcare. Together, we create a supportive environment that amplifies diverse voices, nurtures talent, and drives positive change for our community and beyond.

THE OBJECTIVES OF BNO ARE AS FOLLOWS:

To offer annual programs addressing specific clinical issues effecting minority communities.

To maintain a database of Black Ottawa's Nurses consisting of education, professional experience, employment, etc.

To award scholarships based on the availability to student nurses.

BNO was formed out of necessity. We organized to encourage communication and dialogue among Black nurses in Ottawa and to address promoting the health care needs of our community.

Patricia Ogban, The founder and a group of black nurses both RPNs and RNs, began to meet at a local church to establish the Black Nurses Ottawa in June 2022.

The BNO realized that their concerns were common with those of the National Black Nurses Association.

The BNO is incorporated as a nonprofit organization in Ottawa and Ontario.

BNO PRESIDENT’S ANNIVERSARY SPEECH – JUNE 21, 2025

Ladies and Friends,
It is a great honor to stand before you today as the president of this extraordinary organization, BNO. Together, we have built not just an NGO, but a community
rooted in compassion, resilience, and the unwavering belief that change is possible.

When BNO was founded, it was more than just an idea. It was a declaration. A declaration that our stories matter, our voices matter, and our contributions to health care are not only vital but transformative. For generations, Black nurses
have carried the torch of excellence, resilience, and compassion—often in systems that did not recognize their worth. But still, we rose. And today, we are not just surviving—we are leading.

We stand for professional growth and development, mentorship, empowerment, advocacy, and community engagement. As a community, we try to lift each other
up and push for representation not as a favor, but as a necessity. When Black nurses thrive, healthcare becomes more just, more inclusive, and more effective for all.

We are here to amplify each other. To make space where there once was silence. To advocate fiercely—for fair opportunities, for professional development, for culturally competent care, and for future generations of nurses who look like us and dream even bigger.

But as we celebrate this anniversary, we are also reminded of the work ahead. The challenges we face—whether social, professional, or humanitarian – demand not only action but courage. The courage to speak for the unheard, to act on behalf of the vulnerable, and to dream of a world that is more just and equitable for all. With each new day comes the opportunity to make a difference—to ignite hope, to
spread kindness, and to build bridges where there were once walls.

So, to our leadership team and all the members in this room, thank you. Thank you for your dedication, your ideas, and your belief that one organization, with enough heart, can move mountains. Let’s keep pushing, keep dreaming, and most importantly – keep showing up.

Thank you.
